NZ Commercial Project Awards 2021 – Gold Award, Retail category

The coordination of the many trades involved in this project was excellent and the standard of finishes achieved inside and out were of the highest quality. There was a great team culture on the site and everyone was courteous and a pleasure to deal with.

Meticulous planning and exceptional quality control result in a flagship supermarket.

The New World supermarket in Wanaka’s Three Parks development has an expansive 4,500m² floor plan, including a mezzanine floor and high-level suspended ceilings. The building is predominantly structural steel frame construction with pre-cast concrete panelling and glazed elevations.

Groundworks proved to be the most challenging part of this project, as poorly draining soils meant that the designed soakage system was not suitable. We incorporated a reticulated infrastructure system into our contract to extend the drainage system out to the Council mains. Delays in obtaining engineering acceptance for this change threatened to delay the project, so we engaged extra civil contractors to keep the programme on track.

We poured the 2,800m² post tensioned floor slab in a single pour lasting 24 hours. Limited resources available in Wanaka meant that this required meticulous planning, but it resulted in an exceptional finish on the polished salt & pepper grind floor, installed without a single control joint.

Our team’s efforts in planning, quality control and millimetre-perfect installation of the precast panels also paid off, with the imprinted rough-sawn board effect an impressive feature of the exterior envelope. Each board imprint is aligned perfectly to the adjacent panel imprints and to the lintel panels above.

New World Three Parks opened right on time, just before the critical pre-Christmas trading period.
